On the evening of June 21, the audience of Teatro Donizetti will transform into a stage to welcome the public engaged in the choral performance of a pop song with Donizettian echoes

It will also be possible to visit Teatro Donizetti for free and taste the new cocktail Furioso Gaetano created by Tassino Eventi dedicated to the Donizetti festival

Only for the entire day of the Music Festival, on the occasion of the opening of ticket sales for Donizetti Opera 2025, it will be possible to purchase every order of festival seats at a special price, with a greater reduction for those who participate in the experience Donizetti Opera feat. HardCoro

Bergamo, Teatro Donizetti, Saturday, June 21, 2025

A unique choral experience in the grand hall, free guided tours of Teatro Donizetti, the new cocktail dedicated to Donizetti Opera, and special promotions to secure tickets for the 2025 festival right away: these are all the initiatives that the Teatro Donizetti Foundation is implementing to celebrate the upcoming Music Festival on June 21, opening the theater’s doors to the city and involving everyone in a great novelty for Bergamo.

It starts in the evening at 7:00 PM with Let Me Introduce You to Donizetti, the guided tour to discover the Theater, curated by Clelia Epis. The history of the monument, curiosities, masterpieces of the historic rooms, and the wonder of the theater hall will be revealed to the public, who can book for free their visit, choosing between two shifts, the first at 7:00 PM and the second at 7:45 PM, through the Eventbrite platform:
www.eventbrite.it/e/ti-presento-il-donizetti-tickets-1402463137999?aff=oddtdtcreator

From 7:30 PM to 11:00 PM the Bar of the Gavazzeni Foyer will be open and you can taste for the first time Furioso Gaetano, the new non-alcoholic cocktail dedicated to Donizetti Opera 2025, created by Tassino Eventi: the blend includes non-alcoholic bitter, red conviv, and pink grapefruit soda, which will give an intense and fragrant taste, with a coloration inspired by the velvets of the curtain and the theater.

But the great anticipation is for the “arrival in Bergamo, in the name of Donizetti, of one of the most surprising realities of recent years, which only needs a place, a date, a pop song, and many people who want to sing to create a” truly unique experience. We’re talking about HardCoro, a pop-up format part of a worldwide movement of pub choirs that is becoming popular in Milan and brings together music lovers, making them “experience being part of a choir and protagonists of the evening. Led by musician Michele Acocella, the amateur and extemporaneous choir learns the structure of a song in a few steps, harmonizes the voices, and, within” a couple of “hours, performs the” entire song in multiple voices with extreme satisfaction and enjoyment for the participants. And in the following days, the video, shot by filmmaker Alvise Tedesco, allows reliving the performance on social media.

At Teatro Donizetti on June 21, the bar will be raised: the public will be able to enter the hall from 8:30 PM and at 9:00 PM the pop song that will intertwine with some famous scores from Donizetti’s catalog will be revealed, thus unveiling the more popular soul of the Bergamo composer’s operas, thanks to the musical consultation of Alberto Zanardi, a conductor who has been collaborating with the festival for years and has taken the podium more than once. It will be a way to appreciate and discover how immediate and modern Donizetti’s music is and how opera and its arias are the matrix of all Western music. The pop soul, which breaks down barriers between genres, from Rihanna to David Bowie, from Depeche Mode to Madonna, will guarantee the freshness of the HardCoro format in the encounter with the famous Donizettian scores, to pay homage to our Gaetano on the Music Festival.

To participate, you don’t need to have studied singing or pass auditions, and there’s no performance anxiety, since there’s no audience watching, but whoever comes to the theater sings, guided by the choir master and the provided lyrics. To be part of this experience, you just need to purchase the ticket at the cost of 5 euros at the Ticket Office of Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo or on Vivaticket:
teatrodonizetti.vivaticket.it/it/event/donizetti-opera-feat-hardcoro/269813

The evening is organized in collaboration with Associazione Borgo Tasso Pignolo – Rete di Quartiere Centro Pignolo.

But that’s not all. On June 21, ticket sales will open for the Donizetti Opera 2025 performances and, on the occasion of the celebration day, from midnight until 11:59 PM on Saturday, it will be possible to purchase tickets to attend the festival’s operas Caterina Cornaro, Il furioso nell “isola di S. Domingo” and Il campanello / Deux hommes et une femme with a special 20% discount on the full price, valid for all performances and in every seating category. And for those who will participate in the experience Donizetti Opera feat. HardCoro the promotion will be even more advantageous (equal to a 45% discount on the full price) and will exceptionally last until Sunday, June 22.

A new libretto for a new opera aimed at younger audiences: this is the next challenge of the Fondazione Teatro Donizetti in Bergamo, which begins with the publication of a call to select a librettist Under 35, who will be entrusted with writing the text, in Italian, for a new opera for young audiences between 8 and 14 years old. This is a concrete opportunity for young Italian and European theater writers who will be able to hear their verses sung in autumn 2026 as part of Donizetti Opera, the international festival dedicated to the famous Bergamo composer.

The call for applications with mandatory attachments is already online in the Open Calls section of the Fondazione Teatro Donizetti website, accessible via the link: www.donizettiopera.org/#librettista

The call is open to all those who, as of January 1, 2025, have not yet turned 35 and is part of a project that combines dramaturgical research, education in listening, and concrete attention to emerging creativity. The opera will be dedicated to brothers Gaetano and Giuseppe Donizetti, based on a subject by Luca Baccolini, journalist, music critic, and author, with music composed by Marco Taralli.

The performance will include moments of active participation from the audience in the hall, with guided choral interventions. The chosen author for writing the libretto will receive a gross fee of 3,000.00 euros and will work closely with the creative team of Donizetti Opera, in addition to signing a publishing contract with the prestigious Casa Ricordi.

To participate in the selection, candidates are invited to create the dramaturgical transposition and detailed synopsis with scene divisions of two famous stories from 20th-century Italian literature: Il colombre by Dino Buzzati and Il treno ha fischiato by Luigi Pirandello, for which they will also write the libretto for at least two scenes of their choice, using prose or verse writing. Applications must be submitted no later than July 21, 2025, exclusively through the online form attached to the call. The ranking will be published on September 15, and the delivery of the final version of the libretto is scheduled for December 31, 2025.

With this initiative – strongly supported by the artistic and musical director of Donizetti Opera, Riccardo Frizza – the Fondazione Teatro Donizetti reaffirms its commitment to the development of contemporary operatic repertoire aimed at young audiences, fostering the emergence of a new generation of authors capable of engaging with sung words and the great themes of modernity. At the same time, it relaunches a vision of opera as a living space, capable of educating, engaging, and renewing itself, expanding the promotion and enhancement of Gaetano Donizetti’s figure.

Four titles for three new productions revolving around the theme of “marriage” addressed in different facets:

In the main roles great performers such as Carmela Remigio, Mariangela Sicilia, Paolo Bordogna, Alessandro Corbelli, Vito Priante, Enea Scala and Bruno Taddia, who will be joined by younger artists such as Riccardo Fassi and Giulia Mazzola and the students of the Bottega Donizetti

On the podium, in addition to artistic and musical director Riccardo Frizza, two young talents such as Alessandro Palumbo and Enrico Pagano

Directed by Francesco Micheli, Manuel Renga and Stefania Bonfadelli

Bergamo, 14 to 30 November 2025
Tickets on sale from 21 June 2025

It will be the first edition signed by Riccardo Frizza, in the dual role of artistic and musical director, that of Donizetti Opera 2025, an international festival dedicated to the famous composer from Bergamo, which will enliven the theatres of the “City of Gaetano Donizetti” from 14 to 30 November.

Donizetti Opera is organised by the Donizetti Theatre Foundation of Bergamo chaired by Giorgio Berta under the general direction of Massimo Boffelli, with the support of the Municipality of Bergamo. It is also realised thanks to the support of Allianz (Main Partner of the Donizetti Theatre Foundation of Bergamo), Intesa Sanpaolo, SIAD and a growing number of partner companies and realities adhering to the Donizetti Ambassadors project that support the festival through Art Bonus.

“The Donizetti Opera 2025 program – comments Riccardo Frizza – already reflects the path indicated by the three-year guidelines that we presented last January and on which we have worked carefully in recent months, starting with a greater internationalization of the festival. In fact, in addition to the co-production with the Teatro Real in Madrid, one of the most prestigious theaters in the world, this vision is also realized in the collaboration with Opera Rara, which will allow the public to listen, over a three-year period starting this year, to the complete Romanze by Donizetti, including some in world premiere, within the Sunday morning concert series. Furthermore, the attention to the voice and Donizetti’s music is the beating heart of the initiatives on the program: the four operas, all proposed in new productions, present casts made up of internationally renowned artists alongside young talents, which a festival has the duty to promote and discover. I think of my two colleagues on the podium, Alessandro Palumbo and Enrico Pagano, and then of Carmela Remigio, Mariangela Sicilia, Paolo Bordogna, Alessandro Corbelli, Vito Priante, Enea Scala, Bruno Taddia, who will work with Giulia Mazzola, Riccardo Fassi and the talented students of the Bottega Donizetti, a fundamental reality for the training of a generation of artists who will be able to tackle the Donizetti repertoire with awareness. The focus on young people will also see the imminent opening of an exceptional call for applications, aimed at librettists under 35, for the new young opera dedicated to Gaetano Donizetti and his brother Giuseppe, which will debut in 2026. And again, the valorization of the Donizetti network and the involvement of the city of Bergamo will find in the Donizetti Opera opportunities for meeting and discovery, together with the great attention always paid to activities for children and families, so that the name of Donizetti is increasingly a social glue and a point of reference for the entire community”.

The Donizetti Opera 2025 presents, therefore, for three consecutive weekends four titles proposed in three new stagings: at the Donizetti Theatre Caterina Cornaro will be staged in its modern première, with the entire poetic text set to music by Donizetti and the finale according to the composer’s wishes (Friday 14th, Saturday 22nd and Sunday 30th November), and Il furioso nell’isola di S. Domingo in the complete version of the 1833 score (Sunday 16th, Friday 21st and Saturday 29th November). Domingo in the complete version of the 1833 score (Sunday 16th, Friday 21st and Saturday 29th November); at the Teatro Sociale, in Città Alta, the diptych formed by the one-act plays Il campanello, in the 1837 version, and Deux hommes et une femme in the original French version will be presented (Saturday 15th, Sunday 23rd and Friday 28th November).

The philological work on the works chosen for the 2025 edition was supported and followed up by the Donizetti Theatre Foundation Study Centre directed by Paolo Fabbri, who helped identify the critical editions of the scores published by Casa Ricordi, produced with the contribution and collaboration of the Bergamo Foundation.

‘The plots that the Donizetti Opera 2025 festival brings to the stage,’ explains Paolo Fabbri, “appear to be variations on a single theme: marriage. In Caterina Cornaro, the protagonist would like to enter into a marriage with her beloved, but political reasons, harsh to the point of blackmail, force her into a different kind of union. A cheating and contemptuous wife has made the Furioso lose his wits. The imaginative gambits of an ex of the bride, in Campanello, prevent the newly married man from spending his wedding night with her. In Deux hommes, a redivivus husband and the new bride compete to get rid of une femme too strong-willed and even manic’.

Confirmed for this eleventh edition of the Donizetti Opera are the leading ensembles of recent years, with the Orchestra Donizetti Opera engaged in the two titles at the Donizetti Theatre, the Orchestra Gli Originali – a formation that adopts period instruments – at the Teatro Sociale, and the Accademia Teatro alla Scala Chorus conducted by Salvo Sgrò in all the productions.

Caterina Cornaro and Il furioso nell’isola di S. Domingo

The last opera composed by Gaetano Donizetti will open the festival: Caterina Cornaro, a title created on the libretto by Giacomo Sacchero in 1842 for the Theater am Kärntnertor in Vienna, at the request of the impresario Bartolomeo Merelli, but then staged in 1844 at the San Carlo in Naples. In the Neapolitan city the opera met with a resounding failure dictated by a series of reasons, including a large reworking of the libretto by the censors that affected the clarity of the plot and an orchestration conceived for an Austrian theatre. Hence Donizetti’s desire to intervene substantially on the dramaturgy in the third part of the opera: this very finale, of which the manuscript exists, will be performed for the first time in Bergamo, just as Sacchero’s poetic text will be the original one before the interventions of the Neapolitan censors. The critical edition adopted at the festival was edited by Eleonora Di Cintio for Casa Ricordi and will be performed by the Donizetti Opera Orchestra under the baton of artistic and musical director Riccardo Frizza, with the Choir of the Accademia Teatro alla Scala, led by Salvo Sgrò.

The story of the queen of Cyprus, who became such thanks to a singular friendship between her two contenders, with the power of the Council of Ten ready to strike down anyone who got in the way of the interests of the Venetian Republic, will be staged at the Donizetti Theatre under the direction of Francesco Micheli, who says: “Caterina Cornaro is in fact the last opera that Donizetti composed, at the beginning of the troubled decline of his physical and mental health. The new critical edition, which I have followed in recent years as artistic director of the festival, allows us to fully understand this authentic swan song where the central theme is precisely the slow fading away of the male protagonist. For me, this is a great opportunity to say goodbye to the festival and pay homage to the great Gaetano. Restoring the shocking beauty of this unknown masterpiece is an incredible feat, reminding me of the incredible days of Ange de Nisida‘.

The new world premiere production, co-produced with the Teatro Real in Madrid, will feature sets by Matteo Paoletti Franzato, costumes by Alessio Rosati, lights by Alessandro Andreoli, and dramaturg Alberto Mattioli. In the title role, one of the audience’s favorites, Carmela Remigio, returns to the Donizetti Opera, alongside Enea Scala‘s Gerardo and Vito Priante‘s Lusignano. Riccardo Fassi will play Mocenigo, while Fulvio Valenti will be Andrea Cornaro and Francesco Lucii will play the double role of Strozzi and Un cavaliere del re.

Caterina Cornaro opens on Friday 14 November at 8.00 p.m. and is repeated on Saturday 22 November also at 8.00 p.m. and Sunday 30 November at 3.30 p.m. The preview dedicated to the Under-30s is scheduled for Tuesday 11 November at 5 p.m.

Entirely different fate to that which befell Caterina Cornaro was met by Il furioso nell’isola di S. Domingo, first performed at the Teatro Valle in Rome in 1833, where it was an immediate success with dozens and dozens of performances throughout Italy: in Naples, it was even performed in three theatres at the same time. The Donizetti Opera 2025 offers the critical edition by Eleonora Di Cintio for Casa Ricordi, which restores a couple of cuts made during the season of the Roman debut, thus inserting the complete version of the dry recitative that follows the duet between Cardenio and Eleonora ‘La mia vittima è qui… Apri il ciglio’ and the use of the Sinfonia instead of the Preludio.

The opera centres on the figure of Cardenio, a character inspired by the senseless man from Sierra Morena in Cervantes’ Don Quixote and the protagonist of an anonymous five-act play from which Jacopo Ferretti drew the libretto. The role was played by Giorgio Ronconi, considered by most to be the first “modern” baritone.

The new production of the Fondazione Teatro Donizetti is directed by Manuel Renga, who has curated several projects for children at the Donizetti Opera and who this year, given the acclaim he has received, has been called to tackle a title from the festival, in addition to the Opera Family inspired by this Donizetti work. The show will have sets and costumes by Aurelio Colombo and lights by Emanuele Agliati. Renga introduces his reading as follows: «A photograph and the fog in the mind clears. Or so it seems. Il furioso nell’Isola di S. Domingo, one of Donizetti’s most resounding successes, is a semi-serious opera in which the protagonist is mad and furious, like the madman of the Sierra Morena in Cervantes’ Don Quixote. Madness is commonly spoken of as a plant whose branches can be cut, but the roots remain forever. In the new staging, the key to understanding the whole story is precisely the root of madness, which years after the events on the island, gives new life. The mad old man Cardenio, isolated in his world of memories closed in the past, retired to a nursing home, through the few objects of a distant life returns to the times of the adventure on the island of S. Domingo: the meeting with Marcella and Bartolomeo, the relationship with Kaidamà, the return of his beloved Eleonora, the leap into the void, into the depths of the ocean. Memories, however, become confused, feelings become blurred, reality and fantasy are no longer distinguishable, until the strength of will and love emerge to restore clarity and serenity to life: true love awakens, the one for which it is even permissible to go mad.

The role of Cardenio will be played by the baritone Paolo Bordogna, while Mariangela Sicilia, winner of this year’s 44th edition of the “Abbiati” Award, will make her debut at the Donizetti Opera in the role of Eleonora. Bruno Taddia will play Kaidamà, while Giulia Mazzola will play Marcella. Santiago Ballerini and Valerio Morelli will be Fernando and Bartolomeo, respectively. Alessandro Palumbo will lead the Donizetti Opera Orchestra and the Chorus of the Accademia Teatro alla Scala.

Il furioso nell’isola di S. Domingo debuts on Sunday 16 November at 3.30 p.m., with repeat performances on Friday 21 November at 8 p.m. and Saturday 29 November at 8 p.m. The Under30 premiere will be on Thursday 13 November at 5 pm.

Il campanello and Deux hommes et une femme

The curtain of the Teatro Sociale in Bergamo Alta will open on the diptych formed by the farce Il campanello e dall’opéra-comique Deux hommes et une femmeIn the first case, the young Serafina is betrothed to the apothecary Don Pistacchio, but her beloved Enrico, thanks to a thousand disguises, will interrupt her wedding night by constantly ringing the pharmacy bell. The protagonist of the second opera is Rita, married to the violent Gasparo, but who is united in her second marriage with the timid Pepè, believing her first husband to have disappeared at sea. Gasparo’s sudden return generates a paroxysmal “tira e molla”, in which the protagonist herself ends up at the centre.

Il Campanello will be performed with the critical edition edited by Ilaria Narici for Casa Ricordi with the contribution of the Municipality of Bergamo. The version is the one from 1837 for the Teatro del Fondo in Naples, with sung recitatives instead of spoken dialogues present in the first version of the previous year written for the Teatro Nuovo. This opera proves – once again – that Gaetano Donizetti was a true man of the theatre, as well as a generous artist: in fact, he gave the score of the farce to the Teatro Nuovo company which was in dire straits. «It is noteworthy – explains Paolo Fabbri – that, in Il Campanello, Donizetti presented himself as a one hundred percent author: of the music but also of the libretto, demonstrating his ability as a theatrical poet, assimilated on the field but also the fruit of a creative disposition that can rightly be defined as ‘natural’, which was also manifested with the words, as well as with the notes».

For both operas, the staging will be curated by a single creative team, entirely female: the direction is by Stefania Bonfadelli, the sets by Serena Rocco, the costumes by Valeria Bettella and the lights by Fiammetta Baldiserri. “I find the idea of uniting these two operas that seem like one and the same thing particularly happy – says the director. One penetrates the other both from a musical point of view and in the dramaturgical plot, first of all, for the fact that in Campanello a husband leaves and in Deux hommes et une femme one returns after many years, but above all for that frankly French flavor between the “boulevard” and the “vaudeville”, to which Donizetti delivers them, distancing them from the typicality of his most famous comic operas. Here it seems that Donizetti leaves room only for fun tout court, even a little absurd if you like, without obvious psychological implications. The two works go beyond both farce and opera buffa to wink a little at Feydeau and a little at Ionesco, in surreal marital relationships, disguises and recognitions».

Leading the period instrument orchestra Gli Originali will be Enrico Pagano, included in 2021 by Forbes Italia in the list of 100 Under 30 Italian leaders of the future, conductor of a cast entirely made up of students of the Bottega Donizetti 2025, curated by Giulio Zappa. This group of young talents will be mentored by Alessandro Corbelli, interpreter of the role of Gasparo in Deux hommes et une femme. The participation will be completed by the Chorus of the Accademia Teatro alla Scala.

The diptych is proposed on Saturday 15 November at 8.00 pm, Sunday 23 November at 3.30 pm and Friday 28 November at 8.00 pm, with an Under30 preview on Wednesday 12 November at 5.00 pm.

The new collaboration with Opera Rara

Donizetti Opera’s international collaborations are expanding thanks to the new partnership that is developing in recent weeks with Opera Rara, a British cultural institution that aims to rediscover, study and disseminate rarely performed or forgotten compositions through recordings and live performances. These include the hundreds of songs, arias, barcarolles, and cantatas for voice and piano composed by Gaetano Donizetti, which Opera Rara has been bringing back to light since 2023. At the festival, the performers of the Bottega Donizetti will be the protagonists, among the most famous pieces and some precious unreleased ones, on the occasion of the new Sunday morning appointment at the Teatro Donizetti, which will thus complete the programme of each weekend of the event, which will also feature Donizetti’s chamber vocal repertoire.

Dies Natalis and Opera Family

The Donizetti Opera program is completed with the great celebration on the occasion of Gaetano Donizetti’s Dies natalis, on November 29, which will involve the entire city from the morning. A special program for an equally special day, which will end with the performance at 8:00 pm at the Donizetti Theater of the opera Il furioso nell’isola di S. Domingo.

But already in the afternoon the Donizetti Theatre will be joyfully invaded by the family audience thanks to the Opera Family program that, every Saturday of the festival, will propose an activity for adults and children. On the composer’s birthday, you can attend and interact with the participatory opera taken from Il furioso nell’isola di S. Domingo, proposed with the title Il furioso Gaetano nell’isola di S. Domingo, to which is added the subtitle Ovvero le mirabolanti memorie d’un musicale visionario, directed by Manuel Renga, with the musical dramaturgy by Alberto Zanardi in collaboration with Mariagrazia Mercaldo and the music of Gaetano Donizetti conducted by Giulio Arnofi. The score will be performed by the Ensemble Donizetti Opera who will take up the instruments of the Orchestra del Mare, made by the Liuteria del carcere di Opera with the wood of the migrants’ boats, as a sign of the attention that the festival pays to the crucial themes of our contemporary world. The show, recommended for ages 8 and up, will also be open to school audiences with a double performance on November 26 and 27 at 9:30 and 11:30, and on November 28 at 9:00 and 11:00.

But Opera Family’s offerings don’t stop there. Activities begin on Saturday, November 15 with the workshop Qui Lucia, led by Clelia Epis, offering participants the chance to explore treasures from the iconographic archive of the Donizetti Foundation’s Lucia di Lammermoor productions, along with an interactive tour of the Teatro Donizetti’s monumental spaces (workshop at 3:00 PM, tour at 4:00 PM; recommended for ages 8 and up).

Finally, for boys and girls aged 3 and up, on Saturday 22 November at 4:00 pm at the Ridotto Gavazzeni of the Teatro Donizetti, Piccolo Signor Rumore will be performed, Enrico Gabrielli’s story-game with drawings, noises and music, preceded by a creative workshop at 3:00 pm. With Enrico Gabrielli on the piano, Sebastiano De Gennaro on percussion and noises and Marcello Corti on brass and narrator.

CineDOpera, the film club dedicated to Donizetti

In these months that separate us from the start of the 2025 festival, the film club proposed by the Centro Studi della Fondazione Teatro Donizetti in the Sala della Musica “M. Tremaglia” of the Teatro Donizetti is preparing the public for the language and music of Donizetti. One appointment per month on the weekend, from May to October, from 3:00 pm to approximately 6:30 pm with free admission until all available seats are taken, with reservations recommended on Eventbrite. The calendar therefore proposes, on Saturday 17 May, the title Chiara e Serafina, staged for the Donizetti Opera 2022, introduced by Candida Mantica, who on Sunday 15 June returns to present L’aio nell’emozione, again in the staging of DO 2022. On Sunday 6 July it will be the turn of Livio Aragona and Maurizio Merisio with Rosmonda d’Inghilterra, from DO 2016, to then meet again at the end of the summer, on Sunday 14 September with Paolo Fabbri who introduces Il diluvio universale (DO 2023). Candida Mantica will close the screenings on Sunday 5 October with La fille du régiment (DO 2021).

Elena Carnevali, Mayor of the Municipality of Bergamo, states: “The Donizetti Opera has become an unmissable event not only for Bergamo, but for the entire Italian and international cultural scene. It is much more than a festival: it is a living heritage of our city, an expression of its profound identity and its welcoming, creative, cultured spirit. With the new artistic direction of Riccardo Frizza, the bond with Gaetano Donizetti is forcefully renewed, in the name of a vision that combines continuity and innovation, and aims at greater internationalization starting from the co-production of the inaugural title. This is how Bergamo confirms itself as a vital center of musical and operatic culture, an ambassador in the world of a legacy that speaks Italian, but that belongs to all humanity. At the heart of the festival there is also great attention to the new generations: young artists find space here to grow and train, while children, families and schools are involved in paths that make music and theater a shared good. I like to remember among the many initiatives the call for young librettists in order to search for new talents for contemporary opera. Because this is the deepest meaning of Donizetti Opera: to preserve the past while looking to the future».

Giorgio Berta, President of the Fondazione Teatro Donizetti, continues: «The Donizetti Opera festival is the result of a collective effort that brings together institutions, artists and the public, as well as partners, supporters and Ambassadors of Donizetti, whom I take this opportunity to thank for their precious support, all united in an ambitious cultural project that sees the voice and music at the center. With Riccardo Frizza, a new course has begun, marked by continuity in innovation, as the inaugural opera well represents. In fact, despite the natural changeover in artistic direction, the fertile relationship between the Foundation and Francesco Micheli continues this year in different forms, but with the common goal of enhancing the figure of the great composer from Bergamo, Gaetano Donizetti. In this sense, the collaboration in the direction of the opera Caterina Cornaro fits in, as well as the confirmation by M° Frizza of the titles proposed by his predecessor for the program, on which the new artistic and musical director has worked by carefully chiseling the choice of voices, with leading names of the bel canto repertoire, in the sign of a desired continuity of intent, widely witnessed».

Massimo Boffelli, General Director of the Fondazione Teatro Donizetti, concludes: «Each edition of the Donizetti Opera is a creative and organizational challenge, which the entire Foundation faces with great enthusiasm, competence and professionalism. The festival continues to grow year after year, as demonstrated by the numbers, quality and visibility, in addition to the appreciation expressed by the audience, increasingly international, and by critics. With the artistic direction of Riccardo Frizza and a cast of great value, the 2025 edition marks a new important step forward, aimed at enthralling an increasingly wider audience that, starting from the involvement of all segments of spectators in our city, also creates important bonds beyond national borders. This with the primary objective of enhancing the Donizetti repertoire with a contemporary look and continuing to strengthen the prestige of the festival worldwide. And the 2025 program is concrete proof of this».

The Donizetti Summer Camp returns for 2025, a unique experience that will lead you to discover the works of Gaetano Donizetti and their fascinating reinterpretations, immersed in the wonder of Teatro Donizetti, from the stage to the rehearsal room to the scenography workshop. In a creative and stimulating atmosphere, you will have the opportunity to work on four operas in four weeks, each characterized by an original interpretation that opens new perspectives on opera and theater through play and singing. This year, a title by Rossini is added, La Cenerentola, the fairy tale of fairy tales, with unpredictable twists and a wiser Cinderella than ever. Singing and music will be languages to discover to get in touch with the ancient stories of Lucia, Cardenio, Noah, and Angelina, through music and theater. Each week ends with the production of an opera, a show in which each participant will have an important role and in which every stage element will have been created in dedicated sessions.
The titles:
1. Il furioso all’isola di Santo Domingo, by Gaetano Donizetti
A semi-serious reinterpretation of Donizetti’s opera, focused on the fear of diversity. The opera becomes a whirlwind of misunderstandings and misconceptions that will transform the staging into a tragicomic game, full of surprises and reflections on our relationship with others.
2. Lucia di Lammermoor, by Gaetano Donizetti
A masterpiece that we will explore as a powerful metaphor for the fight against bullying and violence on one’s identity. Lucia becomes a heroine who represents all of us when we find ourselves defending our choices in a world that often tramples them. An encounter between poignant music and a pop aesthetic to tell a timeless story.
3. Diluvio Universale, by Gaetano Donizetti
In this reinterpretation, the dark atmosphere of Donizetti’s opera is transformed into a story of social denunciation. Noah, leader of the Environmentalists, leads a group that takes care of our planet, facing the tribe of the Wasteful who ignore the severity of the climate crisis. An opera that closely concerns us and addresses contemporary issues in a powerful and symbolic way.
4. La Cenerentola, by Gioachino Rossini
Rossini’s opera is transformed into a fairy tale where kindness and intelligence triumph. In this version, Angelina (our Cinderella) is a young woman who, with humility and wisdom, defeats every form of wickedness. A more mature and profound reading of a classic story that invites us to reflect on true inner strength. Each week we will work together intensely and engagingly, exploring not only the operas but also our creative and human side. A formative experience where music, singing, and theatre come together to give life to a unique and constantly evolving interpretation.

Maestro Riccardo Frizza, internationally renowned conductor and musical director of Donizetti Opera since 2017, appointed as artistic director of the event on December 4th by the Board of Directors of the Fondazione Teatro Donizetti, announces his vision for the festival for the 2025-2027 triennium. Under the banner of ‘evolution’, Maestro Frizza intends to continue the path undertaken in recent years with an innovative vision that combines continuity and future.

While the event previously inaugurated its renewed format by revamping the artistic programming and permeating the city with the figure of Donizetti as an illustrious Bergamo native, now the aim is an evolution that brings Gaetano Donizetti the composer back to the center, as the absolute protagonist, accompanied by a cultural project that aspires to consolidate the festival’s position among major international events.

Six fundamental guidelines will direct the event over the next three years, starting with internationality and high artistic quality, for a festival without borders. Indeed, Donizetti Opera intends to strengthen and expand its international dimension, focusing even more on artistic quality and musicological research, to position itself among the great events on the world cultural scene. High-level productions and active dialogue with audiences beyond borders will make the festival a reference point for enthusiasts and experts in the field, as well as for newcomers and curious individuals who want to approach the corpus of the famous Bergamo composer, attracted by events collateral to the artistic programming.

The second strategic objective is building bridges between cultures, thanks to twinnings and co-productions. The festival aims to be a meeting place for different cultures and traditions: in this perspective, co-productions become true twinnings involving the Theatre and the city. They unite communities, interweave stories, stimulate new readings and visions, and create an artistic and cultural contamination that breaks down barriers and differences, for a deeply inclusive event.

The third focal point is making Bergamo the cradle of Voice, thanks to renewed projects and new proposals embracing various arts and disciplines. Starting from the Donizettian bel canto tradition, the voice is celebrated in all its forms, as a contemporary symbol of excellence and creativity.

The fourth objective is the construction of a Donizetti Network: the festival will consolidate the concept, which has made its way in recent years, of ‘Bergamo City of Donizetti’, aiming at further enhancement of the Foundation’s Study Center and the construction of a network that makes Bergamo the epicenter of Donizetti’s heritage to stimulate dialogue on a global level.

Then, on the education and training front, initiatives will see Donizetti Opera for Life Skills: the festival renews its commitment to new generations, integrating Life Skills into educational paths, as recognized by the World Health Organization as positive behaviors in emotional, cognitive, and relational areas, allowing individuals to effectively face daily challenges, both in personal and relational and social terms. The educational programs, designed for children and young people, in collaboration with schools and institutions of all levels, connect dreams, expectations, challenges, and visions of new generations with the universal language of music, in order to guide them to listen to themselves and their own voice as an expression of their vocation.

The final point, completing the strategy, is the reflection that sees ‘the territory in the Theater and the Theater for the territory’. The Donizetti Theater, with its prestigious festival, is increasingly becoming the beating heart of creative Bergamo and is becoming the “House of the City”. A lively and accessible place, even beyond performances, not only for tourists but for the entire community. This is linked to an increasingly close and two-way dialogue with the city’s fervent third sector and the productive fabric of the territory, invited to reflect on the concept of harmonic leadership

“There is much of our Administration’s vision in the project of the new artistic director Riccardo Frizza for the Donizetti Opera 2025-2027: openness, inclusivity, and attractiveness. A project aimed at strengthening internationalization and relaunching the great composer Gaetano Donizetti, projecting Bergamo into the world on the notes of his music.

Culture, we have always said, is a driver of growth, a dynamic resource for building opportunities. Director Frizza’s project goes in this direction, weaving networks of collaboration and planning with other cities, countries, and their cultures, enhancing musicological commitment and bel canto, investing in the education of new generations, and working to bring opera closer to people, not just to passionate audiences. Opera, in fact, is a profoundly universal art that speaks to everyone, beyond technical skills or specific knowledge, always capable of telling the passions, feelings, and stories that belong to every human being.

Even those who are not “insiders” can enter the world of opera, because it does not require expertise to be moved by a powerful voice, a poignant melody, or a staging that amazes and sometimes questions. It is an immediate language that crosses time and borders and continues to speak to all those who want to be involved.

We therefore expect a lot from this new phase and we are certain that it will be a further step towards the affirmation of Bergamo as a city of culture and ‘evolution’,” declares Elena Carnevali, Mayor of the City of Bergamo.

“In the programming proposed by Riccardo Frizza, I particularly appreciate the term evolution: starting from solid foundations to move to a subsequent phase of maturation, growing by relying on a strong and structured identity. It is in line with what we hoped for this new phase of the Donizetti Theater Foundation. The Donizetti Opera will have an increasingly international vocation, bringing new and unprecedented collaborations between our city and other national and European communities, and generating new lifeblood in the city’s artistic production. The theme of alliances is equally stimulating, especially with other important institutions of the city, so rich in different fields and disciplines. An alliance that can be expressed in the development of the theme of the ‘Voice’, the common thread of Donizetti’s production, and above all in the enhancement of Life Skills, a new and original way of bringing music into everyday life, with that usual attention to young generations that the Foundation has long expressed,” states Sergio Gandi, Councilor for Culture of the City of Bergamo.

“The vision of Maestro Riccardo Frizza, already esteemed musical director and now also artistic director of the Donizetti Opera in whom we place full trust, has been favorably received and shared by the Foundation’s Board of Directors, which has grasped its innovation in continuity. This project not only celebrates the centrality of Donizetti’s figure but confirms the prospect of a festival directed towards an increasingly international future. We are certain that, under his guidance, the Donizetti Opera will achieve extraordinary goals, consolidating Bergamo as the capital of voice and bel canto, and a musical reference point in the world,” continues Giorgio Berta, President of the Donizetti Theater Foundation..

“With the word ‘evolution,’ we want to consolidate the role of a festival that is not only a high-level artistic event, but also a driver of cultural, social, and economic growth for Bergamo. Our city, home to the highest Donizetti studies, deserves greater international recognition for its ability to explore, stimulate, innovate, and reinvent itself, starting from tradition. This three-year period will therefore focus on establishing networks and twinning projects, in which dialogue with new international entities will position the city and its Theater as an example of excellence and innovation,” he adds. Massimo Boffelli, Direttore generale della Fondazione.

“After the revolution, of which I was an active part in recent years, which rooted the festival in the fabric of the city of Bergamo, we now want to look forward, strengthening the foundations we’ve built and envisioning a future of growth with an international reach. I envision a festival that evolves without losing its identity, that experiments and consolidates itself by building on tradition and drawing on its strong roots, like the figure of Gianandrea Gavazzeni, father of the so-called “Donizetti Renaissance,” with an increasingly global outlook,” concludes Maestro Riccardo Frizza.

With this ambitious vision, Artistic Director Riccardo Frizza, supported by Marco Vinco as programming coordinator and the renewed Donizetti Opera team, prepares to write a new chapter in the cultural history of Bergamo and its Teatro, for an event that, beyond autumn, enlivens year-round and is an unmissable event for audiences around the world.

The board of directors of the Fondazione Teatro Donizetti, chaired by Giorgio Berta and composed of Emilio Bellingardi, Enrico Fusi, Elisabetta Ricchiuti, Roberta Sestini, Giovanni Thiella, and Alessandro Valoti, met today in Bergamo. On the agenda was the appointment of the new artistic director of the Donizetti Opera festival following Francesco Micheli’s unavailability for renewal. The board unanimously appointed conductor Riccardo Frizza – musical director of the same festival since 2017 – as the new head of the opera festival dedicated to the Bergamo composer for the next three years.
«It is a thoughtful and shared choice – declares President Berta – based on the history and successes of the festival, two indispensable values that see in the appointment of the Brescia maestro an element of continuity and continuous investment in the “cultural heritage” built over these ten years. I therefore renew my thanks to the outgoing director Micheli and congratulate Frizza on behalf of the entire Foundation, confident that he will further enhance the legacy of the Donizetti Opera».
«I am honored to take on the artistic direction of the Donizetti Opera – underlines Riccardo Frizza. The last eight years as musical director of the festival have been an extraordinary experience, made possible by the trust of the entire Foundation – from the stage, to the offices, to the scientific section – as well as by a fruitful collaboration with Francesco Micheli, to whom I extend my thanks for marking a significant period for the city and its festival. Today, in the dual role of artistic and musical director, I embrace this new challenge with enthusiasm, aiming to project the Donizetti Opera into an increasingly broad international dimension. To achieve this, I am certain I can count on the renewed support of all those who have accompanied my activity as musical director over these years».
A press conference will be convened shortly to outline the new artistic and musical direction guidelines.

Riccardo Frizza (Brescia, 1971), musical director of the Donizetti Opera in Bergamo since 2017, is among the most acclaimed conductors of his generation, a regular guest at national and international theaters and festivals such as the Opéra de Paris, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Metropolitan Opera of New York, Bayerische Staatsoper, Teatro alla Scala, Teatro Real, Rossini Opera Festival, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Festival Verdi di Parma, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, and Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden.
Among the commitments of recent years stand out the 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024 inaugurations of the Donizetti Opera festival with L’elisir d’amore, La favorite (Abbiati Award for Best Show of the Year), Il diluvio universale and Roberto Devereux, the Homage to Caruso with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, La clemenza di Tito at the Bilbao Opera, Le tre regine at the Teatro San Carlo, L’amico Fritz at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Lucia di Lammermoor at the Metropolitan Opera of New York, Il barbiere di Siviglia and Maria Stuarda at the Teatro San Carlo, Simon Boccanegra and Attila at the Festival Verdi del Regio di Parma. The latest recordings are marked by Donizetti: the CD Le tre regine with Sondra Radvanovsky recorded in Chicago and Signor Gaetano with Javier Camarena and the festival orchestra Gli Originali, as well as an album with Nadine Sierra for Deutsche Grammophon and Delirio with Jessica Pratt. In June 2021, he won the Ópera XXI Award for Best Musical Director, an accolade awarded by the association of theaters, festivals, and stable seasons of Spain, for the excellence of Lucia di Lammermoor staged at ABAO Bilbao Ópera in October 2019. In March 2022, he was appointed Principal Conductor of the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir. On June 2, 2024, he was named Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, by decree of the President of the Republic, for his merits towards the Nation in the field of art.
