Guided Tours at Gaetano Donizetti’s Birthplace

Gaetano Donizetti’s birthplace is a five-storey medieval building. The Donizetti family lived in the basement, the humblest level of the house. Purchased by the City of Bergamo in 1925, the building was declared a National Monument the following year for its historical significance.
For the first centenary of Donizetti’s death (1948) and again in 1973, the basement was restored and opened to the public. A new restoration campaign launched by the City in 2007 led to the full reopening of the entire building in 2009, when its management was entrusted to Fondazione Teatro Donizetti.
The tour allows visitors to explore the historic rooms of the house, offering an overview of Donizetti’s early life, with insights into his relationship with his teacher Mayr and the world of theatre that shaped his artistic journey.
